Alright, i have spent waaaay too many hours on different forums reading how you need the newest best equipment, the highest poundage this brand or that brand, low hand shock....it goes on and on. sure we do a little poking at each other over here and on WE, but other forums are out of hand. these people are serious. It has to be discouraging for someone new to the sport not wanting to drop a house payment just to get in the game, especially if they are shooting a low weight. Before i go on, i am the first to admit that I love high weights and all the new gear, BUT I would NEVER tell someone that they need it.
This is what I am gonna do, but i need your help. I am gonna buy a brand new bow and new arrows. i want to shoot about 40#'s and it has to be CHEAP. I am looking for a "box store" package or even something picked up at wal-mart. It has to go to at least 28". I want to find cheap arrows and the cheapest quality BH that will perform at those specs. I'll be shooting a flipper rest or cheapo 2 prong. I need your help choosing a bow, arrows and heads.
with the new set up i will go shoot a deer this season. Just to "prove" it can be done and maybe shut a few folks up and give hunters on a budget hope. I'll be targeting does but who knows, I may slam a Gagger!
What do you guys(gals) think?

Well I think you'd be really lucky to find something now at wal-mart, everything has been clearanced out, but if you do it will be dirt cheap!.... I have had good luck with the CE arrows they sell, pretty darn tough.... and their "sabre titanium" broadheads, made by eastman outfitters, seem pretty tough too, I shot one through 3/4" marine plywood and it came out without a scratch........I heard Mathews has a new line of "cheap " bows out, might check on them.......my buddy Dorris just bought his wife a brand new Bowtech for $200.... says it's really nice too!

Great plan Skipmaster This will be a great thread to watch. Equipment is important, but the shooters skill and knowledge is just as important for the proper out come

Sounds like fun, but I think you should up the poundage to 50.

Sounds like fun, but I think you should up the poundage to 50. I think that part of this plan is to show that you cant exclude women or need weight. I have a bow ....the retro browning ('74) that would prove anything that you wanted to prove. If that bow isnt the worst by comparison to todays stuff....what the hell could be worse I think if you shopped for the cabela's arrows (cheap) and used a Browing Rage (cheap) along with MA85 broadheads (cheap) and PSE prong rest (cheap)... You would have a modern cheap rig that would smoke anything in terms of a whitetail I'd contact Browning and let them know what your doing. Offer video documentation which would be hoisted and used as a resource for all of times You'd be surprised at what manufacturers are willing to do to help you make them look good

I think the 40# is right on, there are far more women and children that can't pull much over 40# than there are that can, they really want to hunt, but because of "everyones" opinion that it's not enough, I believe they don't pursue the hunt. Those that have dealt with these limitations and over come them, know that it is possible.

Way to go Skipmaster !!!!! A man after my own hart! Being a new-bee to the sport,or born again after 37 years I have had to think about everything you are saying! It's like little folks don't exist!Every place I go all I see is big $$ and big bows.Years ago when I shot trap I shot next to a guy with a $3000 shotgun, expensive leather shell bag.shooting glasses and even a pad on his shoe to rest his gun on between shots.I'm standing there looking like a rag bag with an old Rem 870 field gun and I just gave him a big when I out shot him!I'm sure it was the gun and not him He probably had to buy a $4000 gun after that. The pro that set me up said"It's all about shot placement and knowing your limitations I can't wait to hear how you make out.I'll be out there with my beloved little Mustang trying my best to take my first with bow.If I get one great but If I don't I'll have fun and be 6 weeks more tuned in (woods wise)and be ready for gun season! The only fear I have is jumping the string because I would have less control over that

OH!.....and you really need to shoot a stupid light arrow based on general consensus!. Give weight (pardon the pun) to the idea that you cant shoot both low weight on the bow and arrow. Remember Doegirl being chastised because she wasn't using a 400grain arrow in a 40# bow? (or was it 50?) That was criminal to suggest that she had to have a rig with a 14" sight window! Talk about setting up for failure!! That still burns me up!

wow! I wasn't expecting a response like this!
i do want to stay around 40# weight. NY 35 is the limit and I know that will work.
If my mother dosen't set up the bow i bought her and start actually using it I may use that. It's a micro midas, youth/ladies bow. I believe that the whole kit was around $300. Not the very cheapest but close. As I decided what I'm using I'll keep everyone posted!

On ebay - at an ebay shop - 3-pack Zwickey Eskimo screw in, 160 grain - $11.25 + about $3.50 for shipping
Are you looking for a new bow, or thinking used bows as well? A used bow might get you sights and a rest along with the bow...
Cheap arrows at Cabelas seem to be a bit limited in that some of the cheapest arrows might be a bit stiff for a 45 pound draw. For example, thier Carbon Hunter is 6 arrows for $30 - however - they only sell for draw weights 55 to 70 or 65 to 80. Still, with a heavy tip and by playing with the length, it might work out well enough!
